Book Synopsis:
This Game Is Getting All Too Real

He said: I like to keep under the radar and mostly hang out with my friends from the rez. But when I saved Riley Berenger from falling off a mountain, that rich suburban princess decided to try to save me.

She said: If I can help Sam Tracy win the heart of the girl he can't get over, I'll pay him back for helping me. I promised him I would, no matter what it takes.
My Review:

I read Hooked (my review) last year and really liked it. I think technically Played can be read as a standalone, but Fred and Ryan from Hooked play a unique role in the story, so a little more background may be helpful for the new reader, but not necessary.

I didn't read the synopsis before reading the book, so there were lots of twists for me in addition to just getting to know the plot of the story. I loved that I didn't know what to expect. And as far as this story goes, there is a lot. Our girl Riley is going through a serious identity crisis as well as misdirecting some of her focus onto "helping" Sam win the heart of the girl he thinks he's in love with by using some very calculated and dishonest means. While Sam doesn't want Riley's help, for some reason he can't say no to her. And after the traumatic situation the two have already been through, they are bonded together in more ways than they thought. And it only gets crazier from there.

The plot gets a little crazy at times. Watching what happens, knowing many of these choices are just a bad idea, is tough to read. But it also reminds me what it was like to be Riley and Sam's age - all those insecurities, all that misdirected angst, the confusion of a first crush versus actual love, family issues. I thought it was all relatable and honest. Now Riley makes some really bad choices, and I was so worried both for her and those she was affecting with her "intentions." I couldn't help but love Sam. He's like a big, smart teddy bear. Despite the drama, I enjoyed watching Sam and Riley's friendship develop and how they were able to connect with each other differently than others in their lives. They were actually very sweet, when they weren't being oblivious. And beyond their relationship, we get to see so much of their personal lives, with Sam and his dad, Sam and his best friend, Riley and her family. Plus the Native American goodness that Fichera intertwines so beautifully.

Played is a great read that I truly enjoyed. I was pulled along from the start. It's full of action and angst, but also beautiful, sensitive moments, and the heart of love, friendship, and hope at its core. Both Hooked and Played are great reads intertwining high school drama with a Native American twist. While I liked Hooked a little more than Played, I think both books are great.

Review: Take Me On by Katie McGarry

Take Me On (Pushing the Limits, #4)
Take Me On by Katie McGarry
(Pushing the Limits #4)
May 27, 2014
Harlequin Teen
544 pages
Genre: Mature Young Adult
(Contains: mature language, sexual references, abuse)
Source: eARC from publisher for Honest review
Book Synopsis:
Acclaimed author Katie McGarry returns with the knockout new story of two high school seniors who are about to learn what winning really means.

Champion kickboxer Haley swore she'd never set foot in the ring again after one tragic night. But then the guy she can't stop thinking about accepts a mixed martial arts fight in her honor. Suddenly, Haley has to train West Young. All attitude, West is everything Haley promised herself she'd stay away from. Yet he won't last five seconds in the ring without her help.

West is keeping a big secret from Haley. About who he really is. But helping her-fighting for her-is a shot at redemption. Especially since it's his fault his family is falling apart. He can't change the past, but maybe he can change Haley's future.

Hayley and West have agreed to keep their relationship strictly in the ring. But as an unexpected bond forms between them and attraction mocks their best intentions, they'll face their darkest fears and discover love is worth fighting for.
My Review:

West Young is Rachel's brother from Crash Into You. While Take Me On can be read as a standalone, there are several references to what happens in Crash Into You, plus this takes place during the ending time period of CIY, so it may be helpful to read CIY first. Plus I loved CIY, so I recommend it anyway.

Our MCs, West and Haley, are not perfect characters, nor perfect people. They have made mistakes, hurt others, suffered loss, and have yet to find the tools to dig them out of the holes and traps they are in. Some of their struggles are from their own choices, some from other's choices, and some are just what we call "life." What goes down in this book, and the past situations these two have endured, are heartbreaking. But this story brings these two people who shouldn't even know each other together, and somehow they find reasons to change, grow, and renew their focus, purpose, and hope in life. I loved reading about both West and Haley. I genuinely liked them both, and rooted for them to make the right choices. Not only did I like them individually, but I loved the tender, determined, and endearing traits they brought out of each other.

Take Me On tackles numerous topics, numerous social and personal issues, and though I don't want to say what they are specifically because I don't want to give away spoilers, I will say that McGarry is able to seamlessly blend so many situations and struggles together, that anyone reading this book should be able to relate to at least one issue, if not more. All of McGarry's books have handled difficult topics, but I think Take Me One has touched on the most topics, and I really appreciate the respect and sensitivity she shows the characters and their situations through her writing. Which then makes the reader feel respected, which is always a good thing. The plot is also exciting, with just the right blend of emotion and action. I didn't want to put the book down, and wanted to fight alongside West and Haley until the end.

I realize that McGarry will write books outside of this series, but honestly, I would be perfectly content if she only wrote stories in this series. I will read them all. Every book is not only the story of its main characters, but we are exposed to incredible secondary characters, and I want to know all of their stories. Katie McGarry has such an amazing knack for bridging gaps between opposing ends of the spectrum and bringing unlikely characters together, to understand each other, to empathize and sympathize, to forgive, to care, to hope, to dream, to live. Take Me On once again hits the mark, and I loved it. I'm looking forward to whatever and whomever comes next.

Book Synopsis:

Ty Porter has always been irresistible to Celia Park. All through high school--irresistible. When their paths cross again after college--still irresistible. This time, though, Ty feels exactly the same way about Celia. Their whirlwind romance deposits them at a street-corner Las Vegas wedding chapel.

The next morning they wake to a marriage certificate and a dose of cold reality. Celia's ready to be Ty's wife, but Ty's not ready to be anybody's husband. As a professional bull rider, he lives on the road and can't bring himself to settle down.

Five and a half years pass. Celia's buried her dreams so that she can afford to raise her daughter. Ty's achieved all of his goals. Or thought he had, until he looks again into the face of the one woman he couldn't forget and into the face of the child he never knew he had.

How much will Ty sacrifice to make Celia's dreams come true, to win her trust, and to prove to her that their spontaneous marriage can still become the love of a lifetime?

My Review:

This one starts with a bang. In the first two chapters I was floored by the decisions these two characters made. It truly had the makings of a great read. But as time progressed, I found myself increasing frustrated with these characters. Talk about hard-headed!  By the 50% mark, I had to set the book aside and take a break for a day because I wasn't feeling like we were getting anywhere. Yes, the scenes and locations were progressing. But the main characters themselves were not progressing much at all with their personalities or humility. This wasn't a quick read, and the repetitiveness affected my enjoyment.

I know many have been swooning over Ty the bull rider, but I found that his "charms" and flirtations didn't work on me. The whole Tawny thing really bothered me after a while. I didn't get it, and I hated the way Ty would refer to her. Seriously not cool. And the way Ty and Celia would drone on and on about how they shouldn't fall for the other or they weren't right for the other or being a couple would be bad for Addie or blah blah blah. Initially, sure, I could buy these arguments, but after a while, it was just annoying and not believable. Fortunately, at some point I started enjoying the story again, and appreciated what the author was trying to do with it, and how the characters finally grew, but I just never fell in love.

I will say that I loved the first book in this Porter Family series, Undeniably Yours. Each book can be read as a standalone. And although I didn't love Meant To Be Mine, I still plan on continuing this series. I am very intrigued by the other Porters and look forward to their stories, as well as anything else Becky Wade writes.

Book Synopsis:
Burned by an unreliable source, Savannah Carmichael, returns to her hometown of Danvers, Virginia with her once-promising journalism career in ruins. Given the opportunity to get her skin back in the game by writing a patriotic human interest piece, Savannah turns her attention to the town hermit, Asher Lee, a wounded veteran who returned to Danvers eight years ago, and hasn’t been seen since.

After an IED explosion in Afghanistan took Asher’s hand and disfigured half of his face, he's lived a quiet life on the outskirts of Danvers where the locals respect his privacy…that is, until Savannah Carmichael comes calling in a borrowed sundress and a plate of homemade brownies. When Asher agrees to be interviewed by Savannah, he starts feelings things for the beautiful reporter that he hasn’t felt in years.

Misfits in small-town Danvers, Savannah and Asher create a bond right away, touching each other’s hearts in ways neither thought possible. When a terrible mistake threatens to drive them apart, they’ll have to decide if the love they found in one another’s arms is strong enough to fight for their hard-won happily ever after.

Excerpt:
Savannah sent the next installment of “Asher Lee: An All-American Story” to Maddox by noon on Friday, and she waited, tense, to find out what he thought. Her phone rang by 12:30.
“Carmichael? Maddox McNabb here. I read your piece.”
            “And?”
“Something’s missing. You’re holding something back.”
            “How do you mean, sir?”
“Your general descriptions are just fine. But, the way you describe him; it’s half-assed. It’s like you’re afraid to say too much. This was a date, wasn’t it? This dinner in the Grove?”
Savannah grimaced. She’d tried to write the piece as two friends having dinner together. Apparently it didn’t fly. “I guess so, sir.”
“Let me give you some advice, Carmichael. Give it heart, or give it up. You falling for this man? Asher?”
Savannah gritted her teeth. She’d promised a human interest story, not her personal business. It felt like whoring herself. Worse, it felt like whoring Asher.
“Your silence tells me all I need to know. That’s the story, Carmichael. Whether you like it or not, that’s the story. How you went after an interview and fell in love instead. Like it or lump it, that’s the story I want. That’s the story I need. That’s the story my readers will “ooh” and “ahh” about on the Fourth of July. The beautiful hard-nosed reporter who fell for the mysterious, disfigured war vet. It’s “Beauty and the Beast” with the “Star Spangled Banner” playing in the background. Don’t like it? Don’t write it. We go our separate ways. You decide, kid.”
Her hackles rose, bitter and indignant. “But, sir, I can do a fine piece on Asher Lee’s injuries, the way this town turned their backs on him, how he writes poetry and went to UVA and got into John’s Hopkins but decided to serve his country instead. His story is remarkable. He’s remarkable. I’m nobody. I’m nothing. No one wants to read a story about me.”
“Wrong!” bellowed Maddox McNabb. “I hate to tell you kid, but right here, right now? You’re the story. Name of the game is human interest. You’re human. I’m interested. Either re-write it by tomorrow, or don’t contact me again.” And he hung up.
Savannah clenched her jaw, lowering the phone from her ear to her lap, her head spinning. Damn it, but she was stuck. And damn it, but she hated being stuck. There had to be another way: another person she could interview, another war vet who had a story to tell…but no, Maddox McNabb wouldn’t be interested in that story. He already had a humdinger on the line.
She took a deep breath, lying back on her bed and staring despondently at the ceiling. Whatever was happening between her and Asher felt too good, too fine, to be used as fodder for a news story. It felt low and cheap even to consider it. And yet…she was a good writer wasn’t she? All of her professors at NYU had told her so, and she’d been the fastest rising reporter at the Sentinel before her inglorious fall. Couldn’t she pull it off in such a way that would appease Maddox but not expose the most private man she’d ever met? She bit her bottom lip, thinking.
There must be a way, she thought, and whatever that way is, I will figure it out before tomorrow.

Entangled Teen
352 pages
Genre: Mature Young Adult Paranormal
(Contains: sexual references & implication, crude humor)

Book Blurb:
War between heaven and hell is coming, but Dante Walker makes it look damn good.

Dante’s girlfriend, Charlie, is fated to save the world. And Aspen, the girl who feels like a sister, is an ordained soldier. In order to help both fulfill their destiny and win the war, Dante must complete liberator training at the Hive, rescue Aspen from hell, and uncover a message hidden on an ancient scroll.

Dante is built for battle, but even he can’t handle the nightmares where spiders crawl from Aspen’s eyes, or the look on Charlie’s face that foretells of devastation. To make matters worse, the enemy seizes every opportunity to break inside the Hive and cripple the liberators. But the day of reckoning is fast approaching, and to stand victorious, Dante will have to embrace something inside himself he never has before—faith.

My Review:

I must say that I truly enjoyed the Dante Walker series. Victoria Scott was able to create such a fascinating character through Dante. He's not for everyone, but I loved him, even when he made me cringe. What I truly enjoyed throughout this series was the character development. We really get to see Dante become so much more than just the superficial collector he started as. Even though he fights against it often, his growth was a beautiful thing (even if he did maintain his swagger, snark, and crudeness). Not only does Dante grow in leaps and bounds, but the other characters as well, from Charlie to Aspen to everyone else. I loved the depths that were explored within this entertaining story.

This final book also takes us into action upon action, situation upon situation, mystery upon mystery. I felt like I was right alongside Dante trying to piece everything together, see how it would all end, imagine yet try not to imagine who wouldn't make it in the end, and not give up hope. There were many twists and turns, and I truly respected all the thought and plot that went into this series, and this last book in particular. Along with the action, there was also some love and romance in the air. Up to the very end, I was fascinated, intrigued, and entertained. No spoilers here. You'll have to read it to figure out what I'm talking about. But I was satisfied with how it all turned out.

As with the previous books, I had some theological issues and question some of the choices of these characters and why these things were found acceptable amongst "liberators." Because of this, I couldn't give it 5 stars. But had I not had these issues, I would have bumped up my rating.

I loved the Dante Walker series. Each book has gripped and entertained me. Each book has shed increasing light on Dante Walker and his misfit friends. Each book has developed into more and more of a fascinating picture. The Warrior, our grand finale, was fabulous, entertaining, action-packed, and romantic. And I must say that Victoria Scott is a fantastic writer. I was completely impressed with all the things coming out of Dante's mouth and mind, and how three books in, she could continue to come up with new ways and sayings that made Dante so very "Dante." Well done!

Review: The Liberator by Victoria Scott

The Liberator (Dante Walker, #2)
The Liberator by Victoria Scott
(Dante Walker #2)
August 27, 2013
Entangled Teen
331 pages
Genre: Mature Young Adult
(Contains: sexual references & implication, crude humor)
Source: Personal purchase
Book Synopsis:
Bad boy, meet bad girl.

Dante has a shiny new cuff wrapped around his ankle, and he doesn't like that mess one bit. His new accessory comes straight from Big Guy himself and marks the former demon as a liberator. Despite his gritty past and bad boy ways, Dante Walker has been granted a second chance.

When Dante is given his first mission as a liberator to save the soul of seventeen-year-old Aspen, he knows he’s got this. But Aspen reminds him of the rebellious life he used to live and is making it difficult to resist sinful temptations. Though Dante is committed to living clean for his girlfriend Charlie, this dude’s been a playboy for far too long…and old demons die hard.

With Charlie becoming the girl she was never able to be pre-makeover and Aspen showing him how delicious it feels to embrace his inner beast, Dante will have to go somewhere he never thought he’d return to in order to accomplish the impossible: save the girl he’s been assigned to, and keep the girl he loves.

My Review:

It's been a while since I read The Collector, but getting back into Dante's mind in The Liberator was like coming home (if my home were the insides of a teenaged boy who thinks quite highly of himself). Though Dante is no longer a Collector and is madly in love, this does not make him some pansy pushover (and if it did, he would vehemently deny it anyway). He's still full of swagger, snark, and all the off-the-wall humor that made me like him the first time around. He's also crude, arrogant, and uncomfortable at times. Dante may not be for everyone, but I get such a kick out of reading his thoughts. But he's also got the girl he loves, and a new assignment, and oh so many thoughts and feelings that are pulling him in such confusing directions with the turn of events his life has taken on. Dante's struggles are very well-written. I could feel the questions and conflict floating around in his mind. And I loved the direction the author took us in, and all the ways we get to know Dante and see him in action.

In addition to Dante, we get to see more of Charlie, who is dealing with her own changes in herself and life in general. New characters are introduced, like Aspen, as well as oldies but goodies. I was impressed by all these character interactions, all the changes in situation and circumstance, the plot twists and turns, and how the author ties together not only the plot, but the depths of the character development especially. Now, the story isn't over, and we have one more book to go with The Warrior, but I truly enjoyed the pace, plot, action, and people of this story. This is such a unique, creative, and entertaining series, and I will be immediately diving into The Warrior!

Though this book never claims to be religious, and seems more of a good versus evil versus something in the middle thing, I couldn't help but feel conflicted about some of the decisions the characters make, and how they didn't quite match my perceptions. I know this seems vague because I hate spoilers, so I don't want to drop any. But I just found a few instances to be contradictory to how I think angelic "liberators" should act. This is just my personal issue. But it is a reminder to the reader that this is not a Bible-based book or Christian fiction.
