Cover Reveal: King of Hearts by LH Cosway

Check out the cover for KING OF HEARTS releasing this summer!! I'm so excited about this!!

Welcome to the City, London’s most prestigious square mile, where finance reigns and Oliver King is a rising prince.

I used to rule the world.

There might be wolves on Wall Street, but there were crocodiles in Canary Wharf. Some of us craved money. Some of us craved power.

I liked money, and power had its advantages, but what I really wanted was to excel, to surpass the men who came before me. I never cared much for love and romance until I met Alexis.

I could feel it the very moment she walked into the interview, with her outspoken charm and vivacious personality. She cast all the others in shadow, made me laugh when life held no humour. Our friendship should have remained professional, but it wasn’t long before the lines started to blur.

You know what they say about the best laid plans of mice and men? Well, I never foresaw where my plans would lead, and only in my darkest hour did I finally see the light…

You can have all the money and prestige in the world and still be the poorest man alive. And love, well, I hate to use a tired old cliché, but love can be the thing that truly sets you free.

CD Reiss is a USA Today and Amazon bestseller. She still has to chop wood and carry water, which was buried in the fine print. Her lawyer is working it out with God but in the meantime, if you call and she doesn’t pick up, she’s at the well, hauling buckets.

Born in New York City, she moved to Hollywood, California to get her master’s degree in screenwriting from USC. In case you want to know, that went nowhere, but it did embed TV story structure in her head well enough for her to take a big risk on a TV series structured erotic series called Songs of Submission. It’s about a kinky billionaire hung up on his ex-wife, an ingenue singer with a wisecracking mouth; art, music and sin in the city of Los Angeles.

Critics have dubbed the books “poetic,” “literary,” and “hauntingly atmospheric,” which is flattering enough for her to put it in a bio, but embarrassing enough for her not to tell her husband, or he might think she’s some sort of braggart who’s too good to give the toilets a once-over every couple of weeks or chop a cord of wood.

If you meet her in person, you should call her Christine.

Review: Starter Wife by Moriah Densley

Starter Wife
Starter Wife by Moriah Densley
October 14, 2014
280 pages
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Contains: mild sexual references
Source: Personal purchase

Linnea King has it all, fabulous social life, adorable children, and her successful husband's income… until he serves her with divorce papers. Her perfect life crumbles in a storm of police reports, cranky bus drivers, and burned dinners. The single life feels as foreign as a trendy haircut.

Just when Linnea fears she’ll lose everything, her new neighbor steps in to help. Not that she’s judging by appearances, but TJ Gates looks like trouble with a capital T. Tattoos, motorcycle, and sexy southern manners, TJ is the last person Linnea expects to be her hero.

A demolitions expert who takes prizefighting gigs to pay the bills, TJ has pretty much screwed up everything that matters, and rebuilding his life after a violent past is harder than it looks. He thinks the polished, expensive-looking Linnea King needs the same thing he wants: a second chance.

Starter Wife was a great read, and at just the level I was looking for at the time. Actually, I take that back. I randomly picked it out of my hundreds of unread books on my kindle because the cover was light and fun, so I figured it would be a light and fun read. Well, I wouldn't call it a heavy read. But it had far more depth than I had wrongly assumed going in, but also the love and lightness I was hoping for. And this was a pleasant surprise and one I enjoyed immensely.

We have Linnea, verging on divorce from her loser husband, who is also tackling the reality of raising her three young children as a single mom and figuring out how she's going to keep enough food on the table without having to approach her parents for help. She meets TJ, her new neighbor and single dad, in a completely unexpected way, and though his actions are heroic, his appearance is rough and grisly. When you have three young children, who have minds of their own, however, they don't judge a book by its cover, and the inklings of a friendship begin. And this friendship, and more, is just what the two of them need to get through not only the coming events in their lives, but give them the much needed second chance at life and love they both desperately need.

Character-wise, I loved Linnea and TJ. They have wonderful depths about them, as well as completely endearing personalities, and I just loved reading about them, learning about them, and cheering for them. They have a tangible chemistry between them, but instead of their relationship becoming all about sex, the author truly brought out a deep friendship, a wealth of commitment, and the beauty of two people who truly are fighting alongside each other as well as for each other. Their romance is genuine and believable, and I loved it. Then, when you add in all the kids and the beautiful connection felt between everyone, I couldn't help but root for them all.

Plot-wise, this is more than just a romance. There are things going on in both Linnea's and TJ's lives individually that are having major impacts on their present and potential future. Plus, stuff from the past still needs to be dealt with and resolved, one of which is Linnea's loser ex-husband. But these things added so much to the story, and watching how the characters dealt with injustice or danger or vulnerability, endeared me to them even more.

I really enjoyed Starter Wife, the characters, the romance, the whole thing. I will also comment that this is a fairly clean book, with some inferences/references here or there. If you're looking for a sex-driven book with a lot of cursing, this is not that book. But if you are looking for a great love story, a great family story, a second chance not just in romance but in life, then look no further.

Review: Confess by Colleen Hoover

CONFESS by Colleen Hoover
March 10, 2015
320 pages
Atria Books
Genre: New Adult Contemporary
Contains: strong language and sexual references
Source: eARC and personal purchase

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Colleen Hoover, a new novel about risking everything for love—and finding your heart somewhere between the truth and lies.

Auburn Reed has her entire life mapped out. Her goals are in sight and there’s no room for mistakes. But when she walks into a Dallas art studio in search of a job, she doesn’t expect to find a deep attraction to the enigmatic artist who works there, Owen Gentry.

For once, Auburn takes a risk and puts her heart in control, only to discover that Owen is keeping some major secrets from coming out. The magnitude of his past threatens to destroy everything important to Auburn, and the only way to get her life back on track is to cut Owen out of it.

The last thing Owen wants is to lose Auburn, but he can’t seem to convince her that truth is sometimes as subjective as art. All he would have to do to save their relationship is confess. But in this case, the confession could be much more destructive than the actual sin…

Well, what I can I say? I loved Confess! I've loved Colleen Hoover's writing since I first laid my hands on Slammed when it first came out. While each of her books since has been special and unexpected and challenging and engaging, and I've liked or loved each in its own way, not all have been subject matter that I've been eager to return to right away after the first read. With Confess, however, I am excited to have another Hoover hit that I look forward to re-reading again and again, just as I have done with the Slammed series. This book is truly special.

Why was it special? Even with the twists and turns, Owen and Auburn, their personalties and choices, were entirely relatable. The way the story developed in Confess was an excellent example of youthful naivete and inexperience, with Owen and Auburn each having lasting consequences to past occurrences in their lives. Situations or similarities that are not unrelatable. Yet the consequences these two face, they could have lived more easily with if 1) others hadn't been taking advantage of their youth, inexperiece, trust, and insecurities, and 2) they had better support systems at home and people to advocate for them. Owen and Auburn could have been anyone, and that is what makes this story so relatable. Not that you've necessarily experienced all or even any of what they've gone through. But if you're like me, then even in your late teens/early 20s, or older, you've had your share of insecurities, self-doubt, trusting the wrong people, not trusting the right people, being taken advantage of, making mistakes; but also finding yourself, your voice, your courage, your strength, your hopes, your dreams, your love, and finding your way. And this story captured it all in the very special way that I've come to expect from Colleen Hoover.

Perhaps this doesn't tell you much about the actual story itself, but that's on purpose. Owen and Auburn's story is a special experience. I will tell you that I genuinely liked Owen and Auburn. I loved their hearts and their spirit, and they are a pair you can't help but root for. Their path had jags and bumps along the way, but the reward is worth it. There is also the incredible interweaving of art and painting in this story, used in conjunction with the theme of confession. Really, what a brilliant idea! And so well executed. And then the last chapter was my favorite. It was absolutely perfect. Now don't skip ahead to the end and read it out of order. Savor the story for what it is, and then enjoy the full circle effect and the beauty of this story, with its love, hope, tragedy, fight, happiness, and fate, to the very end.

Novella Review: Winning Appeal by N.M. Silber

Winning Appeal by N.M. Silber
(Lawyers in Love #4)

Genre: Adult Contemporary 18+
Contains: explicit sex and language

Once upon a time, a good girl who wanted to be naughty, met a naughty boy who wanted to be good...

Beth Pierce, is the Director of Fundraising for her older brother's new legal non-profit. She spends her weekends fighting off lecherous men at charity galas and her weekdays trying to hide her attraction for a certain sexy young attorney in her office.

Mark Patterson, is the object of Beth's desire. He spends his weekends having casual encounters with women and his weekdays trying not to think about how gorgeous, smart, and sexy Beth is. Because not only is Beth his colleague, she's the younger sister of one of his closest friends.

When Mark is assigned to escort Beth to those weekend galas, they both quickly realize that things could get very interesting. Will Beth be as naughty as she would like to be? Can Mark be as good as he wants to be? Even if they give in to their desire for each other, how can they risk romance when so much is at stake?

Mark and Beth have been avoiding the attraction they've had toward one another for a while now, despite the fact that it's glaringly apparent to everyone around them. But when the opportunity presents itself for Mark to escort Beth to the galas she has to frequent, the walls between Mark and Beth finally come down, and a sweet and sexy romance ensues.

Winning Appeal was a quick, enjoyable read in the spirit of the rest of the books in Silber's series. I did enjoy getting to know Mark and Beth, or at least what we did get to know of them. This time around the romance and connection felt rushed. I would have loved more depth and detail. I also kinda wished it wasn't dual POV. Some of the anticipation and mystery was missing. But Beth and Mark were still a fun couple, with a great honesty and openness about them, and the maturity to accept each other's pasts and delve into the future relatively drama-free.

Along with this new romance is a bit of mystery-solving, reminiscent of the first two books in the series. I got a kick out of the gang being together, back to their sneaky selves, and the wonderful camaraderie between them. I genuinely like these characters and enjoy Silber's witty writing and mix of fun and sexy. This time around was a nice read, there were just too many things missing to make it a great read. But I'm still looking forward to more in this series.
