Review & Excerpt: Endre by S.T. Bende

Endre (The Elsker Saga #2)
Endre by S.T. Bende
(The Elsker Saga #2)
July 17, 2014
177 pages
Genre: Paranormal Romance (New Adult)
(Contains: some violence, clean romance)
Source: eARC from publisher for Honest review
Book Synopsis:
Sometimes, finding your destiny means doing the exact opposite of what The Fates have planned.

Winning the heart of an immortal assassin was a dream come true for Kristia Tostenson. Now she’s knee deep in wedding plans, goddess lessons, and stolen kisses. But her decision to become immortal could end in heartbreak -- not only for Kristia, but for the god who loves her. Because while Ull would do anything to protect his bride, even the God of Winter is powerless against the Norse apocalypse. Ragnarok is coming. And the gods aren’t even close to ready.

My Review:

Endre is the second book of The Elsker Saga. Elsker is the first book. There is also a prequel novella, Tur. This saga involves Norse mythology, taking place in both the world of the Norse gods as well as on Earth. Endre picks up right where Elsker left off, with Kristia knee deep in wedding plans (though she delegates well) and preparing to be a goddess herself. And that's just a part of what she's dealing with.

I have really enjoyed reading this series so far. I love the way Bende has combined the world of the Norse gods with the human world. Kristia's life has been turned upside-down, and watching her story unfold alongside Ull's is a pleasure to read. Their love story is not simple, and is only a small piece of what they are dealing with. They have many things up against them, and one particularly annoying elf trying to trip up Kristia, as well as the seemingly unavoidable Ragnarok, all vying for their attention when they really just want to be a couple in love.

Kristia and Ull continue to be wonderful characters. I love seeing their relationship continue to develop, and their romance deepen. They are just such a sweet couple! They put a big smile on my face. I also loved the way the personalities of the gods were developed, making them god-like and larger than life, but with hints of humanity and approachability. They felt real and I really liked that. Really great character casting, making me want to get to know each and every one of them (well, except for that elf guy). Kristia's roommates and best friend also added just the right touches to the story.

Oh, and the wedding! (And the wedding prepwork!) I loved it!! It was perfect. But on a side note, I'll confess I was a little frustrated with the ending of the book. I wanted more! I had a feeling that was how it would end, but it didn't make me any happier to be right. No, it's not a cliffhanger. Not really. Maybe I'm just being greedy. I'm now just left with the anticipation of things to come for my beloved Ull and Kristia. But what did happen with Ull and Kristia - so sweet and lovely and beautiful and romantic.

If you like a sweet, clean romance, combined with hot Norse gods and goddesses and an evil elf and dark forces trying to bring it all to an end, I recommend The Elsker Saga.

Excerpt

When I came to, my chest heaved with sobs. Cold sweat cloaked my body from my forehead to the backs of my knees. My hair was damp, my pulse was racing, and my fingers gripped the sheets so tightly my knuckles ached. I was in my room at Ýdalir, the one place I had always felt safe. Only now I was absolutely terrified.

I ripped the covers off and wrapped my arms around my legs. My nose twitched at an unfamiliar smell. I pulled the cord on the bedside lamp, and looked around to see what might be burning. There was no smoke in the room; all of the furniture seemed to be intact. But when I glanced down, I saw the hems of my pajamas. They were black, singed from the fire I’d desperately hoped had been part of a dream.

This time things had gone too far. If my smoldering pant legs were any indication, being injured in a vision could have far-reaching worldly consequences. And if Elfie had come that close to killing me . . .

Ull had his rules, but I no longer cared. I jumped out of bed and raced down the hallway. When I reached his door I pounded on the distressed wood. Tears streamed down my face but I didn’t bother to wipe them away. The downpour was too intense; it wouldn’t have done any good anyway.

The door flew open and Ull stood on the other side. He wore a loose pair of grey sweatpants and nothing else. Oh hot bejeebus. There was no way this guy was for real. It just wasn’t humanly possible to look that good.

Oh, right. Ull wasn’t human.

Despite the agony coursing through my awakening consciousness, this was a moment of glory I’d remember forever—the first time I saw Ull’s naked torso. His sweats hung low on his hips, affording me a view of the cut just above the bone.

Holy Lord.

“Kristia?” Ull rubbed the sleep from his eyes. He took in my matted hair, tear-streaked face, and shaking hands. “Great Odin. What happened?”

He pulled me to him, crushing my face against the muscles of his chest. The knot in my stomach loosened infinitesimally. Just being near Ull gave me peace, but being this near Ull was like taking a sedative. Breathing in his woodsy smell made my panic subside. And when he pressed his hands against me—one to my hair, the other against the small of my back—my gut knew I was safe. Nothing bad could happen to me so long as I was in Ull’s arms. I inhaled again, letting his familiar scent fill me from the inside until my shaking stilled. Then I pressed my lips against his skin. Hard.

“Sweetheart?” he asked again.

“I had another vision and it freaked me out. Can I stay with you?” I didn’t take my lips off his chest as I spoke. I couldn’t. He tasted divine—like spruce and soap and home. There was a very real possibility my mouth might be permanently adhered to his flesh, like a kid who’d tried to lick a frozen railing.

Only this was far less unpleasant.

Inga Andersson is the envy of every girl in Asgard. On the surface she has it all -- great friends, a job as Odin’s personal fight choreographer, and a happy ever after with her realm’s hottest assassin. But when evil invades Asgard, her perfect world comes crashing down. Someone is planning to kill off the gods, and Inga’s best friend Ull is first on their list. With the Norse apocalypse a nanosecond away, Inga has to decide how she’ll spend her final moments of freedom. Because from the moment this battle begins, Inga’s happily ever after will be nothing more than a memory.

Some things are worth fighting for.

You don't win the heart of an immortal assassin without making a few enemies along the way. Kristia Tostenson prefers Earl Grey to Grey Goose and book clubs to nightclubs, but when she transfers from her one-stoplight town to Cardiff University in Wales she falls in love with Ull Myhr. Her new boyfriend isn't exactly what she was expecting. He's an honest to goodness Norse God - an immortal assassin fated to die at Ragnarok, the battle destined to destroy Asgard and Earth. Kristia's crazy visions are the only thing that can save their realms.

Her orderly life just got very messy.

Waiting on Wednesday (34): This Shattered World

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

This Shattered World (Starbound, #2)

THIS SHATTERED WORLD
(Starbound #2)
By Amie Kaufman & Meagan Spooner
Expected publication date: December 23, 2014

I loved the first book of this trilogy of companion novels. I'm really looking forward to this next couple's book!

Book Synopsis:

The second installment in the epic Starbound trilogy introduces a new pair of star-crossed lovers on two sides of a bloody war.

Jubilee Chase and Flynn Cormac should never have met.

Lee is captain of the forces sent to Avon to crush the terraformed planet's rebellious colonists, but she has her own reasons for hating the insurgents.

Rebellion is in Flynn's blood. Terraforming corporations make their fortune by recruiting colonists to make the inhospitable planets livable, with the promise of a better life for their children. But they never fulfilled their promise on Avon, and decades later, Flynn is leading the rebellion.

Desperate for any advantage in a bloody and unrelentingly war, Flynn does the only thing that makes sense when he and Lee cross paths: he returns to base with her as prisoner. But as his fellow rebels prepare to execute this tough-talking girl with nerves of steel, Flynn makes another choice that will change him forever. He and Lee escape the rebel base together, caught between two sides of a senseless war.

The stunning second novel in the Starbound trilogy is an unforgettable story of love and forgiveness in a world torn apart by war.

Review: Midnight Thief by Livia Blackburne

Midnight Thief (Midnight Thief, #1)
Midnight Thief by Livia Blackburne
(Midnight Thief #1)
July 8, 2014
Disney-Hyperion
368 pages
Genre: Young Adult Fantasy
(Contains: violence)
Source: eARC from publisher for Honest review
Book Synopsis:
Growing up on Forge’s streets has taught Kyra how to stretch a coin. And when that’s not enough, her uncanny ability to scale walls and bypass guards helps her take what she needs.

But when the leader of the Assassins Guild offers Kyra a lucrative job, she hesitates. She knows how to get by on her own, and she’s not sure she wants to play by his rules. But he’s persistent—and darkly attractive—and Kyra can’t quite resist his pull.

Tristam of Brancel is a young Palace knight on a mission. After his best friend is brutally murdered by Demon Riders, a clan of vicious warriors who ride bloodthirsty wildcats, Tristam vows to take them down. But as his investigation deepens, he finds his efforts thwarted by a talented thief, one who sneaks past Palace defenses with uncanny ease.

When a fateful raid throws Kyra and Tristam together, the two enemies realize that their best chance at survival—and vengeance—might be to join forces. And as their loyalties are tested to the breaking point, they learn a startling secret about Kyra’s past that threatens to reshape both their lives.

My Review:

Midnight Thief is the first book of a new young adult fantasy series, set in a medieval atmosphere. I'll admit, it took me a bit to get into this book. I had to set it aside temporarily because I kept trying to compare it to another YA fantasy series involving a female assassin that I love, and I didn't want that affecting my judgment. Once I resumed my reading, I found that Midnight Thief had many aspects all its own and I enjoyed the plot twists and storyline, and how the characters were involved.

I will not go into depth on the story itself because there are too many opportunities for spoilers. Blackburne was able to combine and integrate several common themes in the fantasy genre, but brought her own twist to things, making the read unique in its own regard and creating a world with some interesting aspects. We have a societal hierarchy, orphans and thieves, an Assassin's Guild, Demon Riders, bloodthirsty wildcats, and a light romance. The strength of the story lay with Kyra's mysterious background, her unique abilities, and her questionable choices and their consequences. I found both Kyra and Tristam's situations very compelling and was curious on how they would turn out.

The characters were compelling and interesting to get in the heads of. I enjoyed learning about their backstory, getting more perspective on them, and seeing how their strengths and weaknesses would play out in the story. Kyra is a strong female character, yet she holds certain vulnerabilities that make her more real. Tristam, as well, is a strong male, just receiving his knighthood, yet he has a compassionate human side that played into the story well. James was a mixed bag, and if you've read the prequel novella Poison Dance (which I read afterwards), you'll notice how his life circumstances have affected his ambitions.

While I did enjoy Midnight Thief, there were aspects that kept me from loving it. I found the pacing slow at times, even boring in parts when the storyline would take a turn. There were a lot of things involved in the story, but their integration didn't always flow well for me. I like to be completely engrossed in a book, and this one at times felt like I could put it down with too much ease. Fortunately, there were enough compelling bits to keep me going, but I never had that feeling that it was unputdownable. I also found the Demon Rider aspect unclear and not completely fleshed out. Perhaps that is because the next book will go into more depth, but I found some things with them odd and uncertain and too much was left unclear.

Midnight Thief was a good read. It was entertaining and interesting, with a nice twist on medieval fantasy, a strong female lead, a light romance, and some compelling twists and turns. The end wrapped up fairly well, without a cliffhanger, though it appears that it will be a series. There are enough open-ended questions in the end that I can imagine what may be approached next and can see the potential of an exciting sequel.

Review: POE by J. Lincoln Fenn

Poe
POE by J. Lincoln Fenn
October 22, 2013
47 North publishing
381 pages
Genre: Paranormal Thriller (New Adult)
(Contains: mature language, sexual reference, murder)
Source: eARC from publisher for Honest review
Book Synopsis:
It’s Halloween, and life is grim for 23-year-old Dimitri Petrov. It’s the one-year anniversary of his parents’ deaths, he’s stuck on page one thousand of his Rasputin zombie novel, and he makes his living writing obituaries.

But things turn from bleak to terrifying when Dimitri gets a last-minute assignment to cover a séance at the reputedly haunted Aspinwall Mansion.

There, Dimitri meets Lisa, a punk-rock drummer he falls hard for. But just as he’s about to ask her out, he unwittingly unleashes malevolent forces, throwing him into a deadly mystery. When Dimitri wakes up, he is in the morgue—icy cold and haunted by a cryptic warning given by a tantalizing female spirit.

As town residents begin to turn up gruesomely murdered, Dimitri must play detective in his own story and unravel the connections among his family, the Aspinwall Mansion, the female spirit, and the secrets held in a pair of crumbling antiquarian books. If he doesn’t, it’s quite possible Lisa will be the next victim.

My Review:

I didn't know what to expect when I picked up Poe. The Thriller/Horror genre isn't normally my thing, but there was just something about the synopsis that grabbed my attention. Then I dove into the story, and let me say that from the prologue on, I was completely captivated by this book.

First, I loved Dimitri's voice. The way the author wrote him, communicating his thoughts and feelings, interpreting his actions, not only brought him to life, but made him a character I genuinely liked and loved being in the head of. He was laden with sarcasm and wit, a bit of an anti-hero yet rich in humanity. He interwove humor in one moment, deep emotions in another, and then a touch of romantic love. Dimitri was great!

The other characters were so important to the story. I thought their combined eccentricities and unique personas really layered the story and made their interactions unpredictable and entertaining, as well as tragic and moving in some of the less fortunate events. Lisa was a particularly great addition, integrating not only her equally heartbreaking backstory to Dimitri's, but more importantly becoming the perfect partner in love as well as mystery solving.

The story itself was entirely entertaining. When your main character wakes up in a morgue, you know you're in for a ride, and in this instance, the ride was fantastic. I will not reveal spoilers. But I will say that I found the build-up of the mystery and the suspense really well plotted. The creepiness, the layers of mystery, the horror glimpses, the questions, even the love story, all grow and build and completely captivated me from beginning to end. I couldn't wait to see how it all ended, yet at the same time enjoyed every page. I found myself satisfied with how it all ended, respecting how the author tied things together yet left certain things realistically open-ended.

Overall, Poe was a pleasure to read. I loved it! I was charmed by Dimitri, won over by Lisa, entertained by the cast, saddened by unfortunate events, humored by witty interactions, appropriately creeped-out, and left at the edge of my seat with the suspense of mystery and how everything would turn out. I definitely recommend Poe.
