Two hearts in the darkness…

Makenna James and Caden Grayson have been inseparable since the day they were trapped in a pitch-black elevator and found acceptance and love in the arms of a stranger. Makenna hopes that night put them on the path to forever—which can’t happen until she introduces her tattooed, pierced, and scarred boyfriend to her father and three over-protective brothers.

Must fight for love in the light…

Haunted by a childhood tragedy and the loss of his family, Caden never thought he’d find the love he shares with Makenna. But the deeper he falls, the more he fears the devastation sure to come if he ever lost her, too. When meeting her family doesn’t go smoothly, Caden questions whether Makenna deserves someone better, stronger, and just more…normal. Maybe they’re too different—and he’s far too damaged—after all…

I fell in love with Caden and Makenna in 'Hearts in Darkness,' so I was really looking forward to this sequel. Caden and Makenna are still the sweet lovers we knew them as. Outside of work, they're practically attached at the hip. It's just been two months, but their feelings are deep. Except they've never actually said "I love you" to each other. Now, I understood their trepidation, but avoiding things like that, especially when you feel it, can certainly instill insecurity in a relationship. That constant worry is no fun. But with Caden's past, Makenna is a bit gun shy not to spook to big guy.

But life has a way of making you face things, whether you want to or not. And a trip home for Thanksgiving to Makenna's family's home does just that. Despite their strong love for each other, both Makenna and Caden are tested. Caden's PTSD is put fully through the ringer. Makenna bears the effects of that, as well as her own past, and a shaky future. Sometimes the only one holding you back from having it all is yourself. Will these two make it?

I really enjoyed this quick read. Getting back with Caden and Makenna was a real treat. The addition of some side characters this time around also added some nice dimension, with Makenna's family and Caden's firefighters. I also found a spot or two that misted my eyes, which was a surprise. I liked the emotion brought out of this book. I will say that Caden got a touch repetitive with his issues. I felt for the guy. I really did. But then I wanted to shake him. Luckily, those more sensitive that I were there for him. Overall, this was a great addition to their story. And that ending! Beautiful! Just what I needed.
