She upholds the law. He breaks it.

Two blue hearts, both alike in bravery
In not-so-fair London, where we lay our scene
From gun crime to petty theft
Where family is blood and survival makes hands unclean
In this place, we find two hearts who should be foes
And yet, amidst the turmoil their love still grows
Misadventure abounds and the divide will bring them strife
But with luck, death doesn’t always mean an end to life.

Hearts of Blue is a standalone contemporary romance that tells the story of star-crossed lovers Karla Sheehan and Lee Cross, a police constable and the thief who steals her heart.

I had been truly looking forward to Karla and Lee's story in 'Hearts of Blue' and I was not disappointed. Cosway has a beautiful way of allowing the reader to really walk in the shoes of her characters. This time around, we are journeying along with Karla the Police Officer and Lee the Criminal. We barely met these two in 'King of Hearts' and could already feel their chemistry then, so I knew their story would be good.

What I loved was the exploration of not just what these characters do (or did), but why they do it. The motivation, the desperation, the inclination, all of these and more are explored, and with that we get a much deeper picture of Lee and Karla. One minute I'm indignant alongside Karla, the next minute I'm sympathizing with Lee. Back and forth. Which at times made their relationship exhausting. But really, they had many, many obstacles to overcome, and quite honestly, I often wondered if they would get a happy ending.

But I genuinely loved getting to know Lee and Karla. Their romance was endearing but edgy. These two, I tell you, kept me on my toes. But when they were good, they were very good. They had a lovely chemistry and a real, deep-down respect for one another that was tangible. I could not help but root for them to finally have all their ducks line up. And let me reinforce, if I didn't mention it before, that I loved Lee Cross! Then add in some fantastic secondary characters (Hello, Cross Brothers!) and this was a truly enjoyable read.

While this one wasn't quite as "artsy" as the previous books in this series, I still really enjoyed it and loved Lee and Karla's story. I cannot wait to get my hands on the next books already hinted at to continue this series.

Lee didn’t answer, and instead he took a step forward, forcing me to back up if I didn’t want us to collide. The problem with this meant my back hit the wall a moment later.

“You’re so pretty, Snap,” he said, voice low, as he dropped his face to my hair and breathed in.

I wasn’t wearing a hat, and my hair was tied up in a bun. My entire body trembled when he wrapped his arms around my waist, inhaled deeply and pulled me into a hug. This was a distraction, I knew it, and yet, I let him distract me. I wanted to be distracted, and I was just glad that the blinds in his office had been pulled.

Standing in his embrace for at least a minute with silence all around us, I was unable to move. I liked having Lee close, loved the feel of him and how he could make feel so…surrounded. Despite all the warning signs, my attraction to him only grew stronger. There was just something about him that called to me.

“Lee.”

His mouth moved against my hair. “What is it, Karla?”

“Why are you hugging me?”

“You looked like you needed to be held.” His response was low, and the affectionate undertone had me swallowing deeply. At long last I summoned the willpower to break the hug. His arms fell away from me easily, my stomach churning with confusion. What the hell was I doing?

I stared at the floor when I spoke. “I have to go.”

Heading for the door, I paused when he said gently, “Hey, I needed it, too.”

Review Tour & Excerpt: The Dark Ones by Rachel Van Dyken

The Dark Ones by Rachel Van Dyken
(The Dark Ones Saga #1)
September 20, 2015
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Contains: sex
Source: eARC for Honest review

To touch a Dark One is death.
To talk to an immortal is suicide.
Yet, I've been marked by both.
A Vampire.
And the King of the immortals.
My life is no longer my own.
And now I know the truth, my life was never mine to begin with.
It was theirs.
It's always been theirs.

Oh yeah. Loved it! I've been wanting a new paranormal series to get into. This year I have also discovered Rachel Van Dyken and have been falling in love with her books. So to get 'The Dark Ones' to sink my teeth into (no pun intended) was a real treat. This is the first Dark Ones book, and I hope there are many more, because I loved getting to know these characters and this world.

The World:  It's current time, except humans and immortals live amongst each other. Yet the immortals are far above the humans. As we come to find out, the humans don't know nearly as much about the immortals as they thought they did. And, of course, there is danger lurking in the unknown.

The Story: Genesis has been pulled into the immortal world after being called to face them, and then being marked. But being marked is nothing to be taken lightly, as the immortals have some crazy history, with life-altering consequences affecting humans and immortals alike. The choices that Genesis takes from this point forth will be crucial.

The Characters: Genesis is a great heroine. Watching her transition from the life she led before and how her childhood affected her, to now and how her personality comes out, was engaging and made her an easy character to want to follow along with and root for. Ethan, I also loved. Despite the rough start with him, learning his history and watching his heart, easily won me over. Cassius was such a medley of personality, and I loved that we got to know him slowly but surely. Plus, we have fascinating characters with Mason (loved him), Alex, and Stephanie. Getting bits and pieces of backstory added so much, bringing these characters to life, and allowing me to invest in their outcomes.

The Romance: Now this is where I don't want to give away spoilers. But I will say that I enjoyed the romantic build-up here. Genesis has been marked for mating, but she still has choices to make. And I can honestly say I loved all her choices. I loved the romance between her and the hero. I also loved that she kept him on his toes. But I definitely felt their connection beyond the supernatural factors, and loved where their relationship led them.

The Ending: I loved the final outcome of this story. It had a great climax and fully engaged me. I didn't want to put this book down. Plus, we get a hint as to what is hopefully coming next. But there is resolution to the main story, so no cliffhanger fear here. Can't wait for the next book!

I still tasted her blood on my lips, was embarrassed for the first time in a century when Alex glanced up from his spot at the kitchen table to see me licking my lips like I'd just devoured the poor girl.

He shook his head. "Been that long, huh?"

"Alex…" I closed my eyes and prayed for patience. "…remind me why I let you live here?"

"I'm good-looking," he answered simply. "Besides, I'm a hell of a fighter — scrappy, I think is how you define my kind. You need me."

"Stop." I pressed my fingertips to my temples and rubbed. The ache to have her had consumed me so much that I'd run down the stairs moving so fast I'd nearly collided with a wall, and grabbed blood from the fridge.

I didn't need it.

But I craved it.

And if I didn't drink the donated blood, I sure as hell was going to drain her and enjoyed very last drop.

"I wonder…" Alex's voice pierced my thoughts. "What's it like?" He leaned forward. "Having to learn self-control all over again… being as ancient as you are?"

I ignored him.

He kept talking.

"Blood-free for a century and now…" He grinned and licked his lips. "Kind of like falling off the wagon, yeah?"

"You're giving me a headache." I threw the empty bag of blood at his face. He moved to the side and snickered. "And I'm fine. Everything is just—"

Her smell was intoxicating. She was walking down the stairs, so her heart picked up speed, her body giving off a scent of burnt vanilla and oranges with a hint of sugar.

My mouth literally watered.

"Fine?" Alex said in a mocking voice. "Was that what you were going to say? Damn, man show a little decorum, you look… starved."

"I am," I whispered and fought the urge to rock back and forth. That was the problem with mating — with bonding. Nothing tasted like her, nothing ever would, and typically, having her as my mate gave me full access.

But the more I took…

The stronger the bond.

And the more I wanted…

It was a vicious overwhelming cycle. It would lead me to become emotionally invested while she, as a human, could simply pretend.

It wasn't fair.

Immortals, in essence, were cursed with a deep desire to be like a human — to possess them, to bond with them forever — while humans only felt the same draw to us if they actually loved us.

Ridiculous.

"Oh, there you are." Stephanie pushed Genesis forward and pulled out a chair.
Slowly, Genesis took a seat and glared at each one of us. "Where's Mason?"

It shouldn't have pissed me off.

But it had.

"He's none of your concern," I spat.

"Easy!" Alex chuckled. "Rule number one, don't ask your mate where the other dude is. Just… don't."

Genesis blinked at Alex then back at me. "Because you guys have the capacity for jealousy."

Alex whistled while Stephanie laughed.

Immortals were the most jealous beings on the planet. Had her school taught her nothing?

Was I to be her tutor as well?

"So…" Alex trained his eyes on her, putting her at as much ease as he could without stopping her poor heart. "Now that the mating is complete, you get to learn all about us and service your man here." He slapped my back.

Really. Really. Poor choice of words.

Genesis paled.

I rolled my eyes. "He's kidding."

Alex laughed. "I think it needs to be said that having a human at the house has already helped my mood immensely."

"That makes one of you," Genesis said under her breath.

Alex leaned forward and whispered, "Ethan, try not to be so grouchy. Keep the fangs in and all."

I extended them just to prove a point.

Genesis recoiled.

I instantly felt guilty.

Damn it.

"You won't…" I licked my lips. "You won't have to service me, as Alex so delicately put it."

"Is that what mates do?" Genesis asked, her eyes searching mine. "They…" She lifted her hands into the air and dropped them.

"If that's what you think they do, we have a very big problem." Alex mimicked her movements and winked.

She blushed.

I hissed at him and returned my attention to her. "It's like a human relationship, only stronger. You'll attend functions with me, be by my side, at my beck and call for as long as you live."

I didn't want to say until one day she just didn't wake up. It sounded too cruel.

"And when I'm bored out of my mind… I do what?" She crossed her arms. "I mean, what could you possibly need from me?"

"Adorable." Alex sighed happily. "I'm so glad we kept her."

"Alex…" I was two seconds away from slamming him into the nearest wall. "Make yourself useful and find our human a snack."

"I'm not a pet!" Genesis yelled. "And I'm not your human!"

"You are," I yelled right back, "mine!"

"Kids." Stephanie stepped between us.

I didn't even realize I'd gotten out of the chair and was towering over her, fangs out, hands raised. She'd turned me into a monster. And still, my eyes found her erratic pulse. One more taste…

"Ethan—" Stephanie pushed against my chest. I didn't move. "Ethan!"

"Friend…" Mason walked into the room. "Sit your ass down before she hands it to you."

"Like she could!" I roared.

"Like I have!" Stephanie pushed me again. "Don't tempt me… again."

I sat, while Mason made his way over to Genesis and offered an easy smile. The man had nothing to smile about, yet he was smiling — at my mate.

I growled.

Mason gave me the finger and kept his attention trained on Genesis. "How do you feel?"

"Better." She returned his smile and squeezed his outstretched hand. "Thanks for not… killing me when I asked."

"Damn…" Alex said from the kitchen.

"You were in pain." Mason shrugged. "And I'm glad you're alright."

"She's fine. We're fine. Everything's fine," I said through clenched teeth. "Now it's probably time to give her answers before she thinks she can run off and actually survive in the real world without being hunted by a Dark One, or worse, found by Cassius."

"He isn't all bad," Stephanie said defensively.

We all glared at her.

"What?" She lifted her hands into the air. "I'm just saying he's been trying as hard as we have. So what if he's gotten a bit possessive over the last few numbers that have been called."

Alex slammed his fist onto the table. "He stole Ethan's—"

"Enough." I held up my hand. The pain in my chest grew until it was hard to breathe. I knew what would take that pain away.

Genesis.

But I was too angry to ask for it. Too ashamed to fall to my knees in front of a mere mortal and beg for her to end the pain by allowing me one solitary drop of her blood.

As if on cue, another bag of blood hit me in the head.

Alex must have sensed my mood.

I bit into it and looked away from Genesis's horrified expression.

In New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Jay Crownover’s third novel in her sexy, thrilling Welcome to the Point series, a woman’s search for repentance leads her to the one man from her past she can’t forget as they join forces to save their city—and the explosive love neither can live without.

Titus King sees the world in black and white. Right and wrong. Which is why as a teenager he left behind the only family he’d ever known to make a better life for himself. Now a police detective in one of the worst cities in the country, he can’t deny his life has turned into a million different shades of gray.

The new criminal element in The Point has brought vengeance and destruction right to Titus’s front door, and the difference between right and wrong is nothing compared to keeping those he loves alive. To add to his already strained moral compass, the beautiful and mysterious Reeve Black has made her way back to town, and she might be as dangerous to Titus as the guy trying to destroy the Point because he needs her—in more ways than one.

Reeve knows all about how ruthless this new threat to destroy The Point can be… and instead of running away, she wants to help. She has a lot to repent for and saving the city, plus the hot cop that she hasn’t been able to forget might just be the only way she can finally find some inner peace.

With an entire city poised on the brink of war, Titus and Reeve stand in the crossfire—and it will take two brave souls to fight for the ultimate love.

Another hit from Jay Crownover and my favorite of The Point series so far. Of course Titus, the hot cop, would be a major draw to reading this book. I've been wanting to know his story since Bax punched him in the first book. But I've also wanted to know Reeve's story ever since she walked back into The Point in the last book. So knowing these two power players were finally going to go head to head made the anticipation tantalizing. But the real deal and how it all played out was well worth the wait.

'Better When He's Bold' left us in a crazy place, knowing some psycho was out there trying to quite literally burn down The Point. But Reeve's sudden appearance is what starts this book with a bang, because Reeve knows who the culprit is. Problem is, how to catch the bad guy and what destructive wake will it take to finish him off.

Titus did not disappoint. Crownover's portrayal of our hero cop trying to save the innocents of The Point, taking on burden after burden, fighting his attraction to who many would consider the wrong girl, while he himself has his own monsters locked up deep inside, was perfect. I could feel Titus's struggle, his longing, his convictions, his loyalty, his intensity, his heart. And the man that came out on top after all the craziness was even better than he was at the start.

What I liked about Reeve was that she wasn't some damsel in distress. She was fierce, and independent, not just a survivor but someone who wasn't afraid to carve her own path. Now, while the choices she took along that path weren't always good ones, she also had the humility to seek help, the vulnerability to ask forgiveness, and the heart to straighten herself out and seek love in her life anyway.

The attraction between Titus and Reeve oozed off the pages from the very start. But what I loved was the beauty of their burgeoning relationship. On paper these two should not have been together. But instead they came together to be the perfect yin to the other's yang. Did they have sexual chemistry? Yes, big time! But even more than that they came to a deep understanding of the other, and the depths they went to were beautiful. I loved them together.

There's also tons of action and suspense in this story. We're hunting the bad guy, of course, but he's also a psycho bad guy, so we never know what destruction he's going to come up with next. Plus, we also get some real gems to enjoy or ponder for the future in our past and hopefully future other couples. Yes, love has hit the point, but as is so eloquentally spoken by Titus, "Love can look really strange in the Point. In fact, if you aren't paying attention you might miss it altogether because it doesn't look like love at all."

This book has it all: vengeance, forgiveness, hope, sacrifice, friendship, family, violence, sweetness, betrayal, trust, redemption, and love. The Point is gritty, seedy, dirty, corrupt, but also littered with seeds of love, loyalty, hope, and people just wanting more, wanting better, and learning how to find that within the confines of gray boundaries. Can't wait to see what happens next!

“Are you speaking from experience?” If she ever took her clothes off for money, entire countries would end up broke.

“No. Just from what I heard when they were in my chair and then from watching how quickly my sister got sucked into it all. There is no escape once the Point has you.”

She leaned her head back on the couch and shifted her eyes up to the ceiling. I thought I saw a sheen of moisture dance across the navy-colored surface but then she blinked and it was gone.

“It sucks,” I said. She tilted her head to look at me. “The way everything went down with your sister, that sucks. But you tried to help her, tried to save her, and that’s what you should focus on.”

She made a noise low in her throat and shoved up off the couch. She crossed her arms over her chest and looked down at me with eyes that went flinty hard. “It wasn’t enough. What time do you want to head out tomorrow?”

The quick change in conversation forced me to switch gears. “I have to work in the morning, so when I get back.”

“Are you actually going to come back after your shift tomorrow?”

So my avoidance tactics hadn’t gone unnoticed. “Yes. I’ll try and be here before five. You really do need some clothes that fit.” Brysen had run a few things up after we had been camped out for a few days and they fit slightly better, but no girl alive seemed to have those ridiculously long legs or the same kind of curves Reeve was working on up top. Brysen’s stuff covered her up more than my teenaged neighbor’s, but not enough that I didn’t get an eyeful when I looked at her.

She linked her fingers together and lifted her arms up over her head in a way that pulled the hem of her tank top up over the indent of her belly button and lifted the edge of her tiny shorts so high I didn’t have to use much imagination to envision what all the secret, soft parts of her looked like. Like I needed any more incentive to keep thinking about her and sex when my mind and attention should be anywhere else.

“I can cover it all up, it’s not going to change the fact that you want me and are angry about it.”

She twirled on her foot and flounced back up the stairs. If there had been a single door in the loft I knew she would have slammed it to make her point.

Review Tour & Giveaway: King of Hearts by LH Cosway

king of hearts

Welcome to the City, London’s most prestigious square mile, where finance reigns and Oliver King is a rising prince.

I used to rule the world.

There might be wolves on Wall Street, but there were crocodiles in Canary Wharf. Some of us craved money. Some of us craved power.

I liked money, and power had its advantages, but what I really wanted was to excel, to surpass the men who came before me. I never cared much for love and romance until I met Alexis.

I could feel it the very moment she walked into the interview, with her outspoken charm and vivacious personality. She cast all the others in shadow, made me laugh when life held no humour. Our friendship should have remained professional, but it wasn’t long before the lines started to blur.

You know what they say about the best laid plans of mice and men? Well, I never foresaw where my plans would lead, and only in my darkest hour did I finally see the light…

You can have all the money and prestige in the world and still be the poorest man alive. And love, well, I hate to use a tired old cliché, but love can be the thing that truly sets you free.

This is Oliver King and Alexis Clark's beautiful story. Now, we first met King in 'Hearts of Fire.' I actually have mixed feelings whether I recommend reading 'Hearts of Fire' first or not. I loved the intrigue of meeting King in the previous book and how very curious I was to know his story. But I also think it might have been nice not to know anything about him going into this book, and just to have taken this journey with fresh eyes. So essentially, if you have already read the previous books in this series, go ahead and read 'King of Hearts' and love it, because I know you're dying to read King's story. If you have not read any of the previous books, then I'd suggest going ahead and reading this one first. Then go back and read 'Six of Hearts' then 'Hearts of Fire' and get the full circle experience. But any way you choose, it's awesome.

As far as 'King of Hearts' goes, this story turned out to be so much more than I could have expected. At the start of the story, it appears Oliver King is on top of the world. And Alexis Clark's life is starting to look up too, as she has just been hired to replace King's assistant. Seems like the beginning of your typical billionaire romance, right? Maybe. But that's where the similarities end. Because this is LH Cosway we're talking about. And she has woven a fascinating tale of two people falling in love in a way that is semi-forbidden, but completely endearing. But there are secrets and threats lying in wait, jeopardizing the happiness of this beloved couple. And... that's all I'm going to say about that. Trust me, it's better you read it than I spoil it for you.

But what I can say is how very much I liked King and Alexis. King may be wealthy and driven, but what I really loved about him was his humor, snark, and charm. These qualities drew me to him in the beginning. And then there was the way he interacted with Alexis. Alexis, who was bold and charming and bawdy, and it's no wonder King fell for her. I absolutely loved how the two of them bantered, with such fun and sass and humor. They were adorable. But then they were completely sexy, with chemistry and heat pouring off them in buckets.

Then when this story ultimately takes its turn, the things that drew me to King and Alexis, kept me engaged and hopeful for them, was the resilience of their characters. Life's challenges forced their lives into difficult directions. But what I loved was that deep in their cores, they were still the same people, yet with these new exeriences they could actually become a better version of themselves, if they chose to learn from the past. Watching them wrestle, relearn, and regain hope was heartbreaking, but also endearing. I found myself especially admiring Alexis's compassionate, patient, and forgiving heart. And I admired King's repentance and commitment.

Overall, I loved King and Alexis's beautiful story of hope, forgiveness, redemption, and love. I'm a little in love with King and Alexis. Their story touched me. It may not be as dark as the previous books in this series, but there is a special quality about the tragedy of love found and lost, and the triumph of a love that comes out not just standing, but ahead, after overcoming the odds. 'King of Hearts' is that love story. (Now I'm quite eager for the next story in this series!)

Review Tour & Giveaway: Searching for Always by Jennifer Probst

Searching for Always by Jennifer Probst
(Searching For #4)
June 30, 2015
384 pages
Genre: Adult Contemporary Romance 18+
Contains: sex, profanity
Source: eARC for Honest review

New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling author Jennifer Probst sparks a blissful mind-body connection as her “sexy, satisfying” (Kirkus Reviews) new series continues!

She’s an expert in helping others de-stress, but Arilyn Meadows is running on fumes. Along with her job counseling singles seeking soul mates at the Kinnections agency in Verily, New York, she’s a yoga teacher, animal shelter volunteer, anger management therapist, and helping hand to her beloved grandfather. No time to find Mr. Right—but after discovering her yogi boyfriend in a compromising asana, Arilyn would rather dog-sit for her honeymooning friend Kate than risk her heart on another downward dog. And when police officer Stone Petty—radiating masculinity and bad-boy attitude—is sent to her for mandatory lessons in cooling off when the job gets too hot, Arilyn vows to ignore his seductive glances and sexy grin. But there’s no halting their sizzling flirtation—a red-hot, high-speed chase that’s breaking all the limits.

'Searching for Always' is the fourth book in a series, but can be read as a standalone. Arilyn Meadows has been part of the series since the beginning, but in a supporting role, and not thoroughly fleshed out. Officer Stone Petty was briefly introduced in the last book, but only played a minor role. Any major bits about them previously introduced are restated here, so if this is your first read of this series, you are good to go.

The fun thing about Arilyn and Stone is that they have such a rough start together. Their first glance wasn't a stolen moment from heaven where the stars aligned, birds sang, and a rainbow spread across the sky. No, their first encounter was full of animosity, piss, and vinegar. Not even frenemies. Just plain enemies. Each has a past - Arilyn's very fresh and painful, Stone's distant but equally painful - which has shaped who they are, how they trust, and how they react to the world. But despite each having life's disappointments, they couldn't be more opposite. In fact, they are so opposite it's quite comedic: vegetarian vs fast food junkie, yoga vs weight lifting, wine vs beer, police officer vs counselor, meditation vs aggression. And that's where they meet again, when Stone is forced to attend Arilyn's anger management sessions. Talk about setting themselves up for something crazy (or amazing) to happen.

What I liked most about this story is watching how both Arilyn and Stone changed, made compromises, but also learned from each other, often the hard way, as only strong personalities can do. As they slowly started seeing the positives in each other, and not just the things they disagreed with, they grew past frenemies into people the other could trust, or at least hope to trust. Because trust was a tenative thing here. Especially when each had been hurt in past relationships. But then small catalysts like Arilyn's dad, Arilyn's neighbor, and the ultimate sweetness to the pot - Pinky - triggered changes that neither had even imagined. Those sweet moments of "family" and love were my favorites. And, of course, Arilyn and Stone have a boat load of sexual chemistry. Stone actually takes Arilyn to places she's never been before, and it was just one more instance of their compatibility. Let's just say, Stone is quite the man.

Overall, I loved Arilyn and Stone's beautiful love story. This was a great romantic read of opposites attract, but also opposites can make each other better together than they were alone. And past hurts don't have to sacrifice future love and trust. It was also a beautiful tribute to the love of family, whether that family is human or pet, blood or not.
